Strongly Interacting Neutrinos and the Highest Energy Cosmic Rays
نویسنده
چکیده
Cosmic rays of energies larger than the Greisen–Zatsepin–Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff may be neutrinos if they acquire strong interactions due to a “precocious unification” of forces. A scenario for this to happen is outlined. There is no contradiction with precision measurements carried out at LEP and SLAC. Observable consequences at LHC and future neutrino detectors are discussed. PACS 13.85.T, 13.15, 14.60.S A substantial number of cosmic ray events has been detected in which the primary energy appears to exceed the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff, see e.g. [1, 2, 3, 4] and Szabelski’s recent review [5]. The onset of the GZK cutoff itself is somewhat uncertain: the energy of the rapid turnover of the spectrum depends on several details (for instance, on the injection spectrum, etc. ), see ref. [6] for a modern treatment. Nevertheless, it is unlikely that all the events reported can be explained by fluctuations in the shower development. ∗E-mail: [email protected]

Strongly Interacting Neutrinos as the Highest Energy Cosmic Rays: A Quantitative Analysis
Scattering processes in the cosmic microwave background limit the propagation of ultra high energy charged particles in our Universe. For extragalactic proton sources resonant photopion production results in the famous Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff at about 4×10 GeV expected in the spectrum observed on Earth. The faint flux of ultra high energy cosmic rays of less than one event per year...

We address a class of models in which neutrinos, having a small mass, originate the highest energy cosmic rays interacting with the relic cosmic neutrino background. Assuming lepton number symmetry and an enhanced neutrino

The origin and chemical composition of ultra high energy cosmic rays is still an open question in astroparticle physics. The observed large-scale isotropy and also direct composition measurements can be interpreted as an extragalactic proton dominance above the ankle at about 10 GeV. Photopion production of extragalactic protons in the cosmic microwave background predicts a cutoff at about 5 × ...
متن کاملDetecting Cosmic Rays of the Highest Energies
The highest energies are defined, at a given time, by our detector capabilities. Thus the highest energies will be the just measured or soon to be measured energies. To-day, the frontier in cosmic rays reaches 10 eV. This represents a macroscopic energy, namely 16 J, transported by a microscopic object. For charged particles, the highest energy events seem to necessitate some New Physics, beyon...
متن کاملCosmic rays at ultra high energies (Neutrinos!)
Resonant photopion production with the cosmic microwave background predicts a suppression of extragalactic protons above the famous Greisen–Zatsepin–Kuzmin cutoff at about EGZK ≈ 5×10 10 GeV. Current cosmic ray data measured by the AGASA and HiRes Collaborations do not unambiguously confirm the GZK cutoff and leave a window for speculations about the origin and chemical composition of the highe...
